Yes, all boxes that arrive in Canada are subject to be opened and inspected by Customs. Please note that we do not offer any type of insurance on personal effects. It is strongly recommended not to ship fragile items such as glass, collectibles, or valuable items, as these may be damaged when Customs repackages the boxes. Make sure to declare all items that you want to ship to avoid any penalties. Shipping prohibited items is an offense and may lead to fines and/or jail time. You may call us before shipping your items to get more information about items that may raise concerns when shipping. 

Customs authorities operate independently and may inspect, handle, or detain shipments. ShipTODR.com is not liable for damages caused during these inspections, as these actions fall under the jurisdiction of customs authorities.

ShipTODR.com takes care in handling and consolidating shipments to minimize the risk of damage. However, damages may occasionally occur due to factors beyond our control, such as during transit or customs inspections. Here’s how such situations are handled:

1. Carrier Liability:

ShipTODR.com’s liability for damaged Goods is limited to the lesser of $4.41 per kilogram or $500 per package, as outlined in our service agreement.

     2. Customs Inspections:

If damage occurs during a customs inspection, ShipTODR.com is not responsible, as customs authorities operate independently and may handle packages in ways beyond our control.

     3. Insurance:

ShipTODR.com does not provide insurance beyond the requirements of Ontario law. We recommend that Shippers secure additional insurance independently to cover potential losses or damages during transit.

     4. Proper Packaging:

To reduce the risk of damage, it is the Shipper’s responsibility to ensure that all items are properly packaged, labeled, and protected inside the box.

     5. Filing a Claim:

If damage occurs, you may file a claim. Please ensure that all documentation, including photos of the damage and packaging, is submitted within the required timeframe as specified in the service agreement. Claims are subject to ShipTODR.com’s liability limits.

Q: How can I protect my items against damage?

A: To minimize the risk of damage:

•Use sturdy, high-quality boxes and adequate cushioning materials.

•Avoid packing fragile items without proper protection.

•Ensure boxes are sealed securely and labeled appropriately.

Q: Who is responsible for damage during customs inspections?

A: ShipTODR.com is not liable for damages caused during customs inspections, as these are conducted by independent authorities. It is the Shipper’s responsibility to comply with all customs regulations to minimize potential risks.

Our prices include pickup in the Dominican Republic. Boxes and furniture must be packed well and be ready for pickup.

Generally, packages can take 3-5 weeks from date of container departure to arrival from the Dominican Republic but there can be delays depending on weather, ports or vessel delays.  If you already have a shipment order, you can track it here.  You will also be subscribed to SMS text shipping updates if you have a Canadian phone number.

Personal Goods

In the rare case your package is lost that contains used goods, we would refund the FULL freight you paid. Shiptodr.com is not responsible for lost or damaged items in shipments with used or personal goods.

Glass or Delicate Goods

In the rare case your package is damaged that contains glass or delicate goods, we would only be responsible for the goods if we were to package the item ourselves. In this case if we package your goods and it arrives damaged then we would pay a maximum of $100 towards the replacement goods.

Responsibilities as Freight Forwarder

ShipTODR agrees to use reasonable care in selecting Carriers and customs brokers and carry out its services within a reasonable time after Goods are received for transport. ShipTODr’s responsibilities, rights and defences are governed by any law compulsorily applicable to the mode or leg of transport by which Goods are transported or handled and the Carrier’s terms of carriage. Where Goods are lost or damaged before being loaded on a truck or ship, or after being unloaded from a truck or ship, ShipTODR’s responsibility is limited to the amount of freight and expenses charged for the handling of such Goods. If the place or time of damage to or loss of Goods cannot be determined, Ship TODR’s responsibility for lost or damaged Goods is limited to the lesser of $ 4.41 per kilogram or $500 per vehicle or package.

Prohibited Items for Ocean Freight from the Dominican Republic to Canada

The following items are not allowed to be shipped via ocean freight from the Dominican Republic to Canada:

1. Restricted & Dangerous Goods

• Flammable Goods – Gasoline, propane, butane, lighter fluid, and other flammable liquids.
• Charcoal & Combustibles – Any material that can easily ignite.
• Dangerous Goods (IATA/IMO defined) – Chemicals, toxic substances, and explosive materials.
• Fully Regulated Dangerous Goods – Including hazardous chemicals and reactive substances.
• Hazardous Waste & Hazardous Materials – Includes industrial waste, toxic substances, and radioactive materials.
• Fireworks & Explosives – Gunpowder, ammunition, and pyrotechnic devices.

2. Prohibited Items by Law

• Weapons & Ammunition – Firearms, knives, toy guns, and hunting gear.
• Military Equipment – Including protective gear, uniforms, and electronic equipment.
• Drugs & Prescription Medication – Includes all controlled substances.
• Marijuana & Cannabis Products – Includes medicinal cannabis, edibles, and CBD products.
• Shipments Prohibited by Dominican Republic Law – Goods restricted under local regulations.

3. Agricultural & Animal Restrictions

• Food – no food & drink products allowed to ship without health canada permit.
• Animal Skins & Ivory – Including furs, hides, and ivory-based products.
• Plant Products – Seeds, wood, soil, and any plant-based material.
• Perishable Foods – Fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, and dairy products.

Storage Fees for Shipments Held at a Bonded Warehouse in Canada

If your package is not received or cleared through customs on time, it will be transferred to a designated bonded warehouse by Canadian customs authorities. We do not provide bonded warehouse storage, but you may be subject to storage fees charged by the bonded facility where your shipment is held.

Important Information About Bonded Warehouse Storage:

1. Customs-Controlled Storage:

   • If your shipment is not cleared on time, CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) may move it to a bonded warehouse.
   • This warehouse is designated for holding shipments until duties, taxes, and customs clearance are completed.

2. Storage Fees at the Bonded Warehouse:

   • Fees vary by warehouse location and operator.
   • Typical charges range from $20 - $50 per day depending on package size and warehouse policies.
   • Additional administrative or handling fees may apply.

3. Time Limits & Additional Costs:

   • Shipments held for extended periods may incur additional penalties.
   • If storage fees are not paid, your shipment may be considered abandoned and subject to disposal.

4. Avoiding Storage Fees:

   • Ensure all required documents are completed before your shipment arrives.
   • Pay duties and taxes promptly to avoid unnecessary delays.
   • If you anticipate a delay, contact CBSA or the bonded warehouse to discuss possible extensions or alternative arrangements.

What You Should Do If Your Shipment is Sent to a Bonded Warehouse:

• Contact CBSA or the warehouse immediately to confirm storage fees and the deadline for clearance.
• Pay any outstanding customs duties and taxes as soon as possible.
• If you need assistance with clearance, consider hiring a customs broker to expedite the process.

TV Shipping Policy (Personal Effects to Canada)

4. Replacement Policy for TVs

If your TV is damaged during transit, our replacement policy applies as follows:

Eligibility for Replacement:

• The TV must have physical damage (e.g., cracks, breakage).
• Dead pixels are not covered under this policy.

Replacement Criteria:

• A replacement TV will be provided with an equivalent screen size, not necessarily the same brand or model.
• The replacement TV may differ in brand, model, or specifications, but the screen size will be the same.

5. Reporting Damage

• If the TV is found damaged upon arrival, report it immediately to our customer service team.
• Claims must be submitted at the time of delivery for a replacement to be issued.

6. Exclusions

• Dead pixels are not considered damage under this policy.
• If the TV arrives with dead pixels but no physical damage, it will not be eligible for replacement.
